Excerpt from Mittelniederdeutsches Handworterbuch Als das grosse Mittelniederdeutsche Worterbuch von Schiller und Lubben bereits bald nach seiner Vollendung (1881) vergriffen war, wurde aus den Kreisen des Vereins fur Niederdeutsche Sprach forschung der Wunsch laut, vorerst statt einer neuen Ausgabe ein Handworterbuch ohne Belegstellen zu verofl'entlichen, um moglichst rasch dem Mangel abzuhelfen und um auch solchen, denen das sechs bundige Worterbuch zu teuer sein mochte, das Studium des Mittel niederdeutschen zu erleichtern. Mit derselben Energie, welche Lubben nach Schillers Tode (4. Aug. 1873) den grossten Teil des Hauptwerkes (vom Artikel ginn ab) in verhaltnismassig kurzer Zeit vollenden liess, begann und verfolgte er die neue Aufgabe. Es war ihm aber nicht beschieden, den vollstandigen Druck seiner Arbeit beschaffen zu konnen: als das Werk bis zum dreizehnten Bogen gedruckt verlag, starb er am 15. Marz 1884. Der zeitige Verleger hat dann auf Wunsch des Vereinsvorstandes die weitere Herausgabe des Werkes mir anvertraut. Im Nachlasse Lubben's fand sich dasselbe, bis zum Schlusse des Buchstabens U ausgearbeitet, vor. Ich habe versucht, die Ausgabe naeh den (hundsatzen, wie ich sie aus den ersten zwolf Bogen zu entnehmen vermochte, fortzufuhren. Als wichtigste Abweichung vom Hauptwerk stellte sich die Bezeichnung des langen e, einerlei welches Ursprungs, und zwar sowohl in offenen wie geschlossenen Silben, durch heraus. Aus dieser Wahl des Zeichens ergab sich mir die Notwendigkeit, tonlanges e in geschlossener Silbe durch ein anderes Merkmal zu unterscheiden: ich habe, nach Nerger's Vorgang in seiner auf diesem Gebiete epochemachenden Grammatik des moklen burgischen Dialektes, gewahlt.
